Over The Rainbow

OVER THE RAINBOW (music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg) was written for the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz and sung by Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy. The song found new life with stylized renditions by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and Eva Cassidy, two wonderful singers who passed away far too young. I was smitten with Eva's arrangement and recently demoed my take of it.

When I sing 'Rainbow' I feel that there is a beautiful sadness beneath its innocent and hopeful message. The Portuguese term 'saudade' (which I've learned from singing Bossa Novas) expresses this feeling better than any English term that I know of. 'Saudade' has been described as "a yearning love for someone or something that isn't attainable... something lost in the past or uncertain in the future."*
